Fasting – The Time to Lose Weight!

Fasting can help us get better in tune with the spirit but it can also have a remarkably positive effect on physical health as well. When incorporated into a solid diet plan, fasting can help men and women lose weight. Women may find this to be of particular benefit as fasting can rid the body of impurities that otherwise linger in the skin.

In the past, fasting has been used for everything from making stores of food last longer to protesting political changes or ideas. Fasting was a part of human survival for a long time, and in those times little thought was given to it. Today, modern life is full of technologies that make everything easier, including work and play. Many people sit in front of their computers or TVs and consume far more calories than they should in a single day. Given the ease with which we can over-eat, fasting can bring things into balance and allow us to lose weight naturally.

Diets that incorporate fasting work on many levels. The first reason these diets work is simply that they are easier to keep up with than diets that require calorie counting. Diets that require rigorous note taking or calculations constantly remind their practitioners of what they can’t do, namely eat. In other words, while fasting is no cake walk itself, it isn’t as “in your face” as other diets. You only have to fast in the way prescribed for the amount of time prescribed to see results. Another benefit of fasting is that food you will appreciate your food more, which may cause you to eat slower. If you can turn that into a habit, you will make your meals last longer, which over time can cause you to eat less.

Another way that fasting works to help you lose weight is by being a highly structured affair. You will know exactly how long to fast and when to repeat the process. There is no guessing, you simply have to see it through to the end.

Yet another way that fasting diets work is that they generally allow you to eat a large variety of foods when you can eat. These diets encourage strict caloric intake for part of the time, but tend to be more lax at other times. This helps people stick with them as they are able to splurge a bit on their “off” days. This also means that if you’re doing a diet that doesn’t allow meat you can easily replace essential proteins by eating more vegetables.  You will find yourself experimenting with new foods, and you will likely find quite a few healthy alternatives to junk foods that you enjoy just as much.

Despite these obvious benefits, fasting does have a few drawbacks.

1. When you break your fast it can hard to prevent yourself from going overboard. Binge eating as a result of a strict diet can be very detrimental to your health. Frankly, the temptation that many people feel when ending a fast is to eat everything in sight.

2. Lovers of pastries and other sweets will not lose their affinity for these foods after fasting. Most people who fast continue to use these as comfort foods later on, and this can lead to weight gain after a fast has ended.

3. It is generally a bad idea to eat less than four hours before bedtime. This can make it difficult to stick to a diet that utilizes fasting as participants may feel a strong temptation to eat whenever they can.

4. It may be almost impossible to stick with a fasting diet plan if you feel that you absolutely must have meat in your diet. If you don’t take in enough proteins from other sources when you do eat, your brain simply will not allow you to fast.

5. Naturally, you will have to endure the times that you cannot eat. In some diets, this can be as much as 24 hours at once.

But if you want to lose weight bad enough, you can overcome all of these difficulties. The main thing is to keep your mind focused on the end result.
